The postpartum belly deserves the same consistent care that supported it through pregnancy, and a daily moisturising ritual is one of the simplest ways to give it that attention. This page brings together three traditional formulations for postpartum body recovery: a whipped anhydrous butter, and two emulsified creams that incorporate aloe vera, each drawn from a different Baraka recipe book. All three lean on the same trusted Baraka ingredients used throughout our Mother & Baby DIY Skincare Hub, made simply enough to prepare in under 30 minutes with basic kitchen tools.

What This Recipe Helps With
- Supporting daily moisture for postpartum abdominal skin recovery
- Offering an anhydrous, long-shelf-life butter for consistent daily use
- Providing two lighter, aloe-infused cream alternatives for a different texture
- Creating a massage ritual that supports circulation to the abdominal area
- Giving three formulation choices to match personal texture preference
Why This Is a Great DIY Recipe
Each formulation here uses 5–8 ingredients and comes together with a whipping or emulsifying method. Skill Level: Beginner. The Primary butter is the most forgiving — melt, cool, whip — while the two cream variations involve a water-phase emulsification step that takes a bit more care. Commercially, postpartum body creams with this level of ingredient transparency are hard to find; every formulation here is traceable to a Baraka cooperative. Yield: approximately 165g butter (Primary) plus two creams. This recipe is expanded from our Birth & Postpartum DIY Care Hub, which covers additional recovery and nursing formulations.
Why These Ingredients Work Together
Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter both appear across all three formulations, forming a rich, moisture-sealing base that suits postpartum skin as it adjusts. Traditional Coconut Oil lightens the Primary butter's texture, while Baobab Oil and Shea Oil layer in additional lightweight nourishment. Aloe vera gel gives the two variations their smoother, more spreadable cream consistency, and gotu kola extract in the Renewal Cream adds a botanical traditionally associated with skin support.
Hero Ingredient Benefits
- Cocoa Butter: Provides firmness and structure across all three formulations, appearing in every version on this page.
- Shea Butter: Forms a rich, moisture-sealing base suited to postpartum skin adjustment.
- Traditional Coconut Oil: Lightens the Primary butter's texture for easier daily application.
- Baobab Oil: Adds lightweight nourishment to the Primary formulation.
- Shea Oil: Delivers shea's benefits in a fast-absorbing format across two of the formulations.

Variation: Postpartum Belly Firming Cream
From Traditional DIY Shea Remedies for Mother & Baby Wellness. This formulation is water-based — see Storage & Shelf Life below for its shorter, fridge-recommended window.
Ingredients:
- Shea Butter — 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Cocoa Butter — 30 ml (2 tablespoons)
- Emulsifying wax — 15 ml (1 tablespoon)
- Distilled water — 80 ml (1/3 cup)

- Grapefruit essential oil — 10 drops
- Cypress essential oil — 8 drops
- Create a double boiler and melt the shea butter, cocoa butter, and emulsifying wax together, stirring occasionally.

- Slowly pour the water mixture into the oil mixture while continuously whisking.
- Continue whisking for 3–5 minutes as the mixture cools and begins to thicken.
- Once the temperature drops to about 120°F/50°C, add the vitamin E oil and essential oils.
- Continue whisking for another minute to incorporate fully.
- Pour into a clean container and allow to cool completely, approximately 4–6 hours, before sealing.
Variation: Postpartum Belly Renewal Cream

- Transfer to a clean jar and refrigerate for 1 hour before first use.

Application Tips
Massage whichever formulation you've chosen into the entire abdominal area, lower back, and hips morning and evening, using gentle upward strokes. The two cream variations can also be applied to fully healed surgical scars once your provider has approved topical products. Begin the Firming Cream 2 weeks after a vaginal birth or 6 weeks after a cesarean birth, or whenever your provider gives the go-ahead — this timing guidance comes from the source book itself rather than a Baraka-specific recommendation.
Customisation Ideas
- Choose the Primary butter if you'd prefer the longest shelf life and no water-phase mixing step.
- Choose either cream if you prefer a lighter, more quickly absorbed texture.
- Skip essential oils entirely in any formulation if you'd rather keep things simple during recovery.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store the Postpartum Belly Recovery Butter at room temperature in a sealed jar for up to 3 months. The Postpartum Belly Firming Cream is water-based — because it contains distilled water and aloe vera gel, store it in the refrigerator and use within 1 month for freshness. The Postpartum Belly Renewal Cream should be refrigerated for 1 hour before first use as directed in its source book, then stored at room temperature for up to 3 months.
The Impact of Your Purchase
When you make skincare with Baraka ingredients, you're supporting women's cooperatives who earn fair wages and preserve traditional processing methods. Voice Search FAQ
What's a good DIY moisturiser for postpartum belly recovery?
A whipped cocoa and shea butter blend with baobab and shea oil provides an anhydrous, long-lasting option for daily massage. Apply to the entire abdominal area, lower back, and hips morning and evening using gentle upward strokes to support circulation.
What's the difference between the butter and the two creams?
The Primary butter is anhydrous and shelf-stable at room temperature for up to 3 months, while both cream variations incorporate aloe vera gel and water, giving them a lighter texture but a shorter, fridge-dependent shelf life. Choose based on texture preference and how quickly you'll use the batch.
Why does the Firming Cream need refrigeration?
This particular formulation combines distilled water and aloe vera gel with the butters, making it water-based rather than anhydrous. Because of this, it must be refrigerated and used within one month, unlike the Primary butter, which is shelf-stable at room temperature for several months.
When can I start using these postpartum formulations?
The Primary butter and Renewal Cream can be used as soon as you feel comfortable, while the Firming Cream's source book suggests waiting 2 weeks after a vaginal birth or 6 weeks after a cesarean, or whenever your provider approves. Always follow your own provider's specific recovery timeline first.
