DIY Postpartum Mood Support Massage Bar

Last updated: August 2026

The emotional landscape of the postpartum period can shift by the hour, and having something tactile — a small ritual you can hold in your hands — often helps more than it seems like it should. This traditional massage bar, drawn from Baraka's DIY recipe books, combines grounding cocoa butter with bergamot, clary sage, and lavender essential oils into a solid, mess-free format. It's part of the same care approach covered throughout our Mother & Baby DIY Skincare Hub, and comes together in about 25 minutes with basic kitchen tools.

What This Recipe Helps With

  • Supporting emotional wellbeing during the postpartum period through massage
  • Providing a mess-free, solid format that's easy to use one-handed
  • Offering a grounding self-massage ritual for quiet moments alone or with a partner
  • Creating a calming, aromatic experience through bergamot, clary sage, and lavender

Why This Is a Great DIY Recipe

This bar uses just 7 ingredients and comes together with a simple melt-and-pour method. Skill Level: Beginner. It's very forgiving — the butters melt together easily, and the essential oils go in right at the end, so there's little room for error. Commercially, aromatherapy massage bars formulated specifically for the postpartum period are hard to find, and options with a fully transparent ingredient list are rarer still; this version is entirely traceable to a Baraka cooperative. Yield: approximately 100g. This recipe is expanded from our Birth & Postpartum DIY Care Hub, which covers additional postpartum recovery formulations.

Why These Ingredients Work Together

Cocoa Butter provides a solid structure that melts perfectly at body temperature, forming the grounding base of this bar with its own naturally uplifting chocolate aroma. Shea Butter adds deep moisture for skin that may be dry from hormonal fluctuations, while Traditional Coconut Oil lightens the texture for a smooth, luxurious glide during massage. Bergamot, clary sage, and lavender essential oils layer together for a calming aromatherapy blend, and a touch of jasmine absolute rounds out the scent profile.

Hero Ingredient Benefits

  • Cocoa Butter: Provides a solid structure that melts perfectly at body temperature, forming the base of this massage bar.
  • Shea Butter: Deeply moisturises skin that may be dry from hormonal fluctuations, creating a smooth, luxurious massage experience.
  • Traditional Coconut Oil: Lightens the texture of the bar so it glides smoothly during massage.

Ingredients

Cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, and bergamot, clary sage, and lavender essential oils measured out for a postpartum massage bar

  • Bergamot Essential Oil — 10 drops
  • Clary Sage Essential Oil — 10 drops

Directions

Melted cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil in a double boiler

  1. Create a double boiler with a heat-safe glass bowl over a pot of simmering water.
  2. Add the cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil to the bowl.
  3. Stir occasionally until completely melted and well combined.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly, about 5 minutes.

  7. Remove from molds and store in a cool, dry place in a closed container.

Application Tips

Warming a solid massage bar between the hands before applying to skin

Rub the solid bar between your hands to warm and melt it slightly, then massage onto skin, focusing on areas where tension tends to gather — shoulders, neck, or lower back. This works well for self-massage during a quiet moment, or applied by a partner as part of a shared ritual. The bar can be used as often as feels helpful throughout the postpartum period.

Customisation Ideas

  • Skip the jasmine absolute if you'd prefer a simpler, three-oil scent profile.
  • Cut into smaller bars after pouring for a more portable, pocket-sized format.
  • Keep one bar bedside for a calming ritual before sleep.

Storage & Shelf Life

Store in a cool, dry place in a closed container for up to 6 months.

Voice Search FAQ

What's a good DIY massage bar for postpartum mood support?
A cocoa and shea butter massage bar with bergamot, clary sage, and lavender essential oils provides a calming, aromatic self-massage ritual. Warm the bar between your hands and massage onto areas of tension like shoulders or lower back.

How is a massage bar different from a massage oil?
A massage bar is solid at room temperature and melts on contact with warm skin, so there's no risk of spills and it's easy to use one-handed. A massage oil is liquid from the start and offers more glide for longer massage sessions.

How often can I use this massage bar?
There's no strict limit — use it as often as feels helpful throughout the postpartum period, whether as a quiet solo ritual or with a partner's help. Many people find it useful in the evening as part of a calming wind-down routine.

Can I use this bar while breastfeeding?
The bar is intended for areas like shoulders, neck, and lower back rather than the chest or nipple area, so it can be used alongside breastfeeding. If applying near the chest, wipe the area with a warm cloth before nursing.
