Mango Shea Body Butter
Make mango body butter by whipping 4 oz (113 g) mango butter, 1 oz (28 g) Baraka Shea Butter and 2.75 oz (78 g) jojoba oil for 5 minutes, then adding 30 drops of essential oil and whipping for 2 more. Mango body butter recipe: the short version
The recipe makes about 7.75 oz (219 g) of body butter before the essential oils go in. You need four ingredients, a bowl and an electric mixer. First you smash the mango butter into a paste. Then you whip it with the shea butter and jojoba oil for 5 minutes. Finally you whip in the essential oils for 2 more minutes and spoon the butter into a container of your choice. The full ingredients and steps are below.
Ingredients
- 4 oz (113 g) mango butter
- 1 oz (28 g) Baraka Shea Butter
- 2.75 oz (78 g) jojoba oil
- 30 drops (about 1.5 g) of your favorite essential oil blend
Thirty drops is about 0.05 oz (1.5 g), roughly 0.7% of the total weight, which is well under the 2% limit for body products. Leave the essential oils out of anything made for babies or young children. Do not use bergamot or lemon essential oil in a leave-on recipe like this one, because both are phototoxic. Use sweet orange at the same number of drops, or leave the essential oil out.
Directions
- Cut the mango butter into small cubes and put them in a bowl.
- Smash the mango butter until you have a paste.
- Add the shea butter and jojoba oil, then whip together.
- Using an electric mixer, whip for 5 minutes.
- Add your choice of essential oils (30 drops or fewer) and whip for 2 more minutes.
- Place in a container of choice.
Storage
Keep the finished body butter in a closed container, away from heat and direct sun. Baraka Shea Butter itself keeps 2+ years when stored properly, away from heat and direct sun, so the same care applies to your jar.
Shea butter mango butter: how they work together in this recipe
This recipe uses both, and mango butter is the larger share. There are 4 oz (113 g) of mango butter to 1 oz (28 g) of shea butter, a ratio of four to one by weight. Jojoba oil, at 2.75 oz (78 g), is the third fat in the bowl.
Baraka Shea Butter is unrefined, strained and filtered only, with no refining, bleaching or deodorising. It is solid at room temperature and melts on contact with skin. Its natural colour ranges from ivory through cream to pale yellow and varies between batches. A mild nutty smell is normal and is not a fault, so your body butter may smell slightly different from one jar of shea to the next.
Baraka Shea Butter is made by hand by women's producer groups at the Konjeihi Women's Enterprise Centre in Upper West Region, Ghana. Wayne Dunn has worked directly with the Konjeihi Women's Enterprise Centre for over 15 years.

Create your own mango body butter
Start with the recipe as written, then make it your own through the scent. The recipe calls for 30 drops of your favorite essential oil blend, so the fragrance is the part you choose.
Here is how to keep your own blend within safe limits:
- For a body butter, keep essential oils to 2% of the total weight or less. About 20 drops make 0.04 oz (1 g), so 30 drops is about 0.05 oz (1.5 g).
- If you make a bigger batch, work out the weight of the fats first, then scale the drops to match.
- Choose oils other than bergamot or lemon. Sweet orange works at the same number of drops.
- For anything made for babies or young children, leave the essential oils out completely.
If you prefer an unscented butter, skip the essential oils. The only scent left is the mild nutty smell of the shea butter, which is normal. Write down the blend and the drop count you use, so you can repeat a batch you like.
Whipped mango butter recipe: how the whipping works
The whipping happens in two rounds, and both use an electric mixer. First, cut the mango butter into small cubes and smash it into a paste, so the mixer starts with a soft base rather than hard pieces. Next, add the shea butter and jojoba oil and whip for 5 minutes. Last, add the essential oils and whip for 2 more minutes. That is 7 minutes of whipping in total.
The recipe has no melting step. Everything goes into one bowl and is whipped together, so you need no pan or heat source.
DIY mango body butter: making it as a gift
A homemade body butter is easy to give. Spoon it into a clean jar or tin, add a label with the date and the scent you chose, and it is ready to hand over. Use it yourself, or package it for special people, because it makes an incredible gift.
Because the batch is about 7.75 oz (219 g) before the essential oils, it fills a small jar or two. Make a second batch if you want to keep one and give one away. Store each jar in a closed container, away from heat and direct sun.
