DIY Weaning Comfort Balm
DIY Weaning Comfort Balm
Last updated: August 2026
Weaning is rarely a single moment — it's usually a gradual unwinding that brings its own physical discomforts alongside the emotional ones. This traditional balm, drawn from Baraka's DIY recipe books, combines shea butter with sage and peppermint to offer comfort during that transition, whether it's happening over weeks or months. It's part of the same care approach covered throughout our Mother & Baby DIY Skincare Hub, and comes together in about 15 minutes with basic kitchen tools.

What This Recipe Helps With
- Soothing breast discomfort during the weaning transition
- Providing a moment of comfort for a feeling of fullness between reduced feedings
- Supporting a gradual, gentle approach to reducing milk supply
- Creating a traditional botanical ritual for a significant motherhood transition
Why This Is a Great DIY Recipe
This balm uses just 6 ingredients and comes together with a simple melt-and-pour method. Skill Level: Beginner. It's forgiving to make — there's a wide margin for how long you melt the butters, and the essential oils go in at the end, so there's little risk of getting the process wrong. Commercially, balms formulated specifically for weaning comfort are difficult to find outside specialty postpartum shops, and options with a fully transparent ingredient list are rarer still; this version is entirely traceable to a Baraka cooperative. Yield: approximately 90ml. This recipe is expanded from our Birth & Postpartum DIY Care Hub, which covers additional nursing and recovery formulations.
Why These Ingredients Work Together
Shea Butter forms the protective, moisturizing base of this balm, providing lasting comfort to breast tissue as it adjusts through the weaning transition. Coconut Oil lightens the texture so the balm spreads easily without feeling heavy, while Cocoa Butter adds a touch of structure for a balm that holds its shape well in the jar. Sage Essential Oil is a traditional botanical long associated with the weaning process, and Peppermint Essential Oil layers in a light, cooling sensation that many find comforting during this transition.
Hero Ingredient Benefits
- Shea Butter: Provides lasting moisture and comfort to breast tissue as it adjusts during weaning, forming the protective base of this balm.
- Traditional Coconut Oil: Lightens the texture so the balm spreads easily without feeling heavy on tender skin.
- Cocoa Butter: Adds structure so the finished balm holds its shape well in the jar.
Ingredients

- Shea Butter — 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Traditional Coconut Oil — 30 ml (2 tablespoons)
- Cocoa Butter — 15 ml (1 tablespoon)
- Vitamin E Oil — 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon)

- Stir occasionally until all ingredients are completely melted and well combined.
- Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly, about 3 minutes.
- Add the vitamin E oil, sage essential oil, and peppermint essential oil.
- Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients.
- Pour into a clean, dry container with a tight-fitting lid.
- Allow to cool completely until solidified, approximately 2–3 hours.

Application Tips
Apply to breasts after nursing or pumping during the weaning process, avoiding the nipple area itself. This balm can also be applied between feedings whenever a feeling of fullness or engorgement occurs. It's best suited for use during active weaning rather than throughout regular breastfeeding, since the goal here is comfort during a gradual reduction in feeding rather than support for an ongoing nursing routine.
Customisation Ideas
- Reduce the peppermint to 2–3 drops if you find the cooling sensation too intense.
- Omit the sage if you'd prefer a more neutral scent, replacing it with an equal number of drops of lavender.
- Chill the balm briefly in the fridge before use for an extra layer of cooling comfort.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store at room temperature in a sealed jar or tin for up to 6 months, away from direct sunlight and heat.

Voice Search FAQ
What's a good DIY balm for weaning discomfort?
A shea butter balm with sage and peppermint essential oils provides comfort for breast tissue during the weaning transition. Apply after nursing or pumping, avoiding the nipple area, whenever a feeling of fullness or engorgement occurs.
Can I use this balm while I'm still actively breastfeeding?
This balm is formulated specifically for the weaning transition rather than ongoing nursing, since sage is traditionally associated with reducing milk supply. If you're still actively breastfeeding and not yet weaning, a nursing-specific balm without sage is a better fit.
How is this balm different from a regular nursing balm?
Unlike food-safe nursing balms designed for direct nipple application before feeding, this balm is meant for the breast tissue during the weaning transition and is applied avoiding the nipple area. It's a comfort balm for a specific, temporary phase rather than a daily nursing companion.
How often should I apply a weaning comfort balm?
Apply after nursing or pumping sessions during active weaning, and again between feedings whenever fullness or discomfort arises. There's no strict schedule — use it as often as feels comforting during this gradual transition.
